BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Summer time is here and people are wanting to take their dogs for a walk, but veterinarians are saying not to have them out for too long. Animal doctors said the heat can quickly overwhelm our four legged friends. Jessica O’Neal with the Highland Road Animal Hospital said yesterday they had an emergency where a dog was rushed in because he was taken on too long of a walk. Luckily he survived, but O’Neal said there are ways to prevent this from happening again.

“If you want to exercise with your pet, do it early in the morning or late in the evening,” said O’Neal. “You have to work up to it. If they’re not in good condition, then they can't run three miles in the heat of the summer.”

O’Neal said there are signs to look out for to tell if your pet is in distress.

“If they’re panting excessively and they can't calm down. If they seem uncoordinated or if they just refuse to walk anymore,” said O’Neal.

Most of all please be sure to give your pet plenty of water.
