JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A former John Carroll Catholic High School teacher has been charged with having inappropriate sexual contact with two female teenage students.

Robert Leland Grant, a 26-year-old from Gardendale, is accused of engaging in the inappropriate behavior with two 16-year-old students off-and-on between May 2013 and Decemeber 2013.

Grant was a math teacher and the girls were students in his class.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says he would meet the two girls at separate locations away from the school and participate in sexual touching and kissing.

After Grant allegedly made advances toward a third teenage girl, deputies say the student reported it to John Carroll administrators.

"Thankfully we had a student come forward and say he had approached her and she reported it to authorities at the school there," Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian said.

Grant resigned after the administration confronted him and told him they would be launching an internal investigation.

John Carroll officials also contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office about the alleged relationships. The Sheriff's Office launched a four-month investigation that ended with warrants for Grant's arrest.

Grant was charged with two count of a school employee having sexual contact with a student under 19.

He was arrested on Monday and was released from the Jefferson County Jail on an $11,000 bond.

Chief Deputy Christian said if this had happened before 2011, there would have been no charges filed in the case.

"That  law changed in 2011 and rightfully so because of what we were seeing all over the country. Something had to be done to curtail that," Christian said.

Authorities say Grant has cooperated with the investigation and they don't know of any other victims at this time.

"We want educators to know in this day and time we're gonna find you out. So don't do it," Christian said.
