ELKMONT, AL (WAFF) -

Limestone County Commissioner Ben Harrison said workers will begin moving debris from an illegal dumpsite next Monday.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) approved the cleanup plans Friday. As part of the agreement with ADEM, they cannot stop the process once it has begun. Harrison said the holiday weekend would prevent continuous work until Monday.

The debris pile off of Leggtown Road in Elkmont is made up of 60 truckloads of debris from the L&S Shopping Center demolition in Athens. A fire broke out at the dumpsite and smoldered for nearly two months.

Jeremy Perry lives nearby, and said he and his mother came down with pneumonia during that time. They believe the dumpsite fire had something to do with them getting sick, but they cannot prove it. He said he and his neighbors are glad to see the debris get hauled away.

"It was smoky," Perry said. "It smoked the whole community up. Kids couldn't play outside. We had a kid get a rash; my 10-year-old kid. They said it was caused from the fire. I think it definitely needs to be moved, and it don't need to be done again."

ADEM inspectors said the only debris that may have contained asbestos was a roof, which cannot be tested because it burned. The county hopes to move all of the debris to the Morgan County Landfill within 5-6 days of starting the removal.
