FYFFE, AL (WAFF) -

A fireworks show at a DeKalb County church went awry Sunday, injuring three children.

Two of the children were treated for minor injuries, but a 14-year-old was taken to the hospital for what her mother said were second-degree burns.

Airel Ramza of Fyffe is now recovering at home after she was struck by fireworks that went astray. It happened around 9 p.m. at the Fyffe Church of God.

Church officials said they were holding their annual fireworks display at the church parking lot when it happened. Pastor Tony Thomas said they usually use the city ball field, but there was a scheduling conflict this year.

Thomas said approximately 600 people attend the yearly event, but because it was in the parking lot, he feels the crowd was probably closer than they should have been,

"One of the canisters, after it was ignited, fell over," Thomas said. "When it exploded, it came off the ground; it fell over and then shot into the crowd."

Airel's mother Gail Ramza said the teenager was seated in a chair when she was struck by the fireworks.

"She's got two places on her face," Gail said, describing her daughter's injuries. "One on the shoulder, and one on the right leg. It's all second-degree burns."

Gail said she is thankful to the church and community for their show of support for their daughter. She said Airel will go back to the doctor in the next couple of days.
