Huntsville City School Board President David Blair announced he will not run for another four-year term Sunday.

"I was asked recently to look at running for reelection even though I had said I would not," Blair said in a statement. "Out of respect for these friends/leaders, I needed to take time to contemplate running for reelection.  After looking at my work obligations, talking with my friends and supporters, and recognizing that I no longer have kids in the system, I feel it is time for me to concentrate on other opportunities."

Blair said he plans to stay active in the schools and in the community, helping in any way he can.

He also said in his statement that he is throwing his support to Beth Wilder as his replacement. "Beth is very bright, committed and involved in the schools. She has been paying attention to all the changes that have been implemented, especially the desegregation case, and I expect her learning curve to be short," he said.

He had previously said he planned to support Wilder as he launched his campaign for the Republican nomination for the Alabama State Senate. He lost that race to incumbent, Senator Paul Sanford.

Blair was elected to the school board in 2010. He has been an outspoken supporter of Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski, as well as the sometimes-controversial Common Core educational standards.
