LITCHFIELD, SC (WMBF) - A shark got a little too close for comfort for some beachgoers at a Litchfield Beach Friday.

The 4-foot shark was hooked by a fisherman around noon, according to Stephanie Byrdic of Myrtle Beach.

Byrdic pulled out her phone to record the eventful moment.

"A guy had been fishing," Byrdic recalled. "He reeled it in and had to unhook it, but he wasn't sticking his hand inside [the shark's] mouth, so he clipped the line," she added.

The shark flopped around as soon as it was released from the line, before the fisher dragged it by its tail into the waters.

Expert, Tim Handsel, from Ripley's Aquarium, says this looks like it was a Spinner shark and this type of shark is very common to the Carolina coast line.

Handsel explains these sharks are not dangerous and they go for fish and maybe small sting rays.

However he does say the way the man handled the shark was very risky because no matter the type of shark... the animal is very flexible. He describes the shark could have swung around and bit the mans hand out of self defense.

Handsel does not want people to worry but only to realize that sharks are following their food source and if you see a school of fish you should be cautious a shark or another predator could be following.

Overall Handsel is happy to know the shark was released back into the water.

After the shark was returned to the water, "It took a minute for people to start swimming again," Byrdic laughed.

Byrdic and her sister usually go to North Litchfield Beach every Friday, she said, but this beach trip is one to remember.
