HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - As of Friday, the only abortion clinic in north Alabama will close its doors.
Officials at the Alabama Women's Center said the clinic will voluntarily surrender its license to perform procedures.
On Tuesday, clinic leaders informed the state they were shutting down after being unable to meet requirements of the state's new abortion law.
With a July 1 deadline, the clinic would have had to meet one more requirement in the law, a building requirement under the ambulatory health care standards to essentially bring it up to code with a surgical treatment center. The current facility that's been open on Madison Street since 2001 doesn't allow for that.
An attorney with the Alabama Public Health Department said the clinic recently submitted paperwork and blueprints of a new facility to the state showing an intent to move to a building off of Sparkman Drive.
State health officials confirmed those plans are on hold because the center's staff and architect did not respond to the Alabama Department of Public Health's questions about the new facility.
