SOMERVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A 14-year-old Somerville girl saved her neighbor's life by performing CPR after he collapsed on Monday.

Carly Goodwin was on her way out the door, when she heard her neighbor's wife yelling for someone to call 911. Goodwin got a dispatcher on the line and then went over to see what was the matter.

On the floor laid 59-year-old Robert Ryder. Ryder battles several health issues, including cancer. Carly knew she had to act fast. Morgan County 911 dispatcher, Jennifer Corum, said she knew something was terribly wrong as soon as she answered the call.

"I knew it was pretty bad because you could hear other people in the background and the wife, I think she was too frantic to do anything, so I'm glad she was there," Corum said.

Because Carly had no CPR training, Corum became not only Carly's lifeline, but Robert's too. "I watch TV, so I kind of knew how to get the head up and stuff like that, but that was about it," Carly explained.

"I ripped his shirt open really fast and I just wanted to start as soon as possible to help him, so I just got some scissors and cut his shirt open. I just put the heel of my hand like she said, on the middle of his chest and then put my other one right there and pumped 200 times with a little bit of pressure. I'd get a heartbeat, it would stop, so I had to keep doing it," Carly explained.

She continued CPR until emergency crews arrived.

"The ambulance guy said I was brave and strangely calm and he's like seriously, you did a great job. If you hadn't of done what you did, he would have been a goner," Carly said.

As for the man who's life she saved? He knows Carly held his life in her hands. "If Carly hadn't been there? I'd have died. I would have died for sure. She's a guardian angel," said Robert Ryder.

After a couple days in the hospital, Robert is now back home and considers Carly part of his family.
