HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Tennessee Valley is no stranger to severe weather. That is why Huntsville, Madison city and Madison County leaders said they are partnering with a company to promote a critical weather initiative.

The idea is to improve communications between SAF-T-NET subscribers and city and county officials before, during, and after a storm. SAF-T-NET enables you to be alerted to severe weather in your specific area.

Subscribers are also able to use their cell phone to communicate with emergency responders. For example, if a tree is down in your neighborhood, you can send a picture with your cell phone and notify officials. The service operates 24/7.

Bob Baron, the president and chief executive officer of the company, said the idea stemmed from the 2011 tornado outbreak. The tool was something Governor Robert Bentley recommended.

"We knew cell phones were the last to go out," Baron said. "They did go out, but they were the last to go out and the first to come back. The recommendation was to at least start with cell phone capability and be able to reach out to the community via the EMAs that provide information."

Baron said he plans to expand the SAF-T-NET tool statewide, however they are currently focusing on Madison County.
