DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A 14-year-old has been arrested for the shooting death of a Mount Vernon woman.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, the juvenile was taken into custody after deputies responded to a 911 call on County Road 99 just after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies found 38-year-old Kelena Annette Hicks in the living room of her mobile home suffering from a gunshot wound.

Hicks was flown to Huntsville Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. Her body was delivered to the forensics lab in Huntsville for an autopsy.

The juvenile was taken to a detention facility in Anniston where he will be held pending a hearing on his status for trial.

"This is one of the most disturbing cases I have had to deal with in my career," said Sheriff Jimmy Harris. "You just can't imagine a 14-year-old doing something this brutal. This will be a case for the courts to decide on the status of this young man. He will remain in juvenile custody until that decision is made. I am very sorry for the family and their loss in this case. This young woman had just lost her father last month and this family is devastated. My thoughts and prayers go out to them."

The sheriff's department is withholding further comment on this case. They did not reveal the connection between the alleged shooter and the victim, however neighbors said the teenager was the victim's son.

Carolyn Parker said Hicks had a challenging relationship with her son, and believes police may have been called to the home at least once in the past.

"I could sit on my porch in the evening time, and I could hear them arguing, but it wouldn't be all the time," Parker said. "Mother and son, they have a tendency to disagree."

Parker said she didn't hear the gunshot Tuesday, but watched the ambulance take Hicks away, and then saw deputies take the son away.

The boy's hearing has not been set.
