A grieving mother is warning others about the dangers of extreme heat following the death of her son.

Casey Gilbert suffered symptoms of heatstroke after working outdoors last Wednesday. He was taken to the hospital and later died. He was 27 years old.

While difficult to talk about the experience so soon after Casey's death, Stephanie Anderson said if her son's death can serve as a warning to others and can save just one life, it is worth it.

"I hate falling asleep at night because I know I've got to wake up in the morning and start another day without my son," Anderson said.

Emergency officials said Casey had a body temperature of 108 degrees. Anderson said the doctor told her Casey would not survive.

"I went in and held him in my arms until he took his last breath," she recalled.

Casey had planned on marrying his girlfriend of eight months. Anderson said she wants to use her son's death to warn others about the dangers of heat, how to take proper precautions, and know when to say when.

"Drink plenty of fluids. The main thing is, if you get to feeling weak and tired, just stop. No job, no amount of money is worth your life," she said.

Casey Gilbert is one of two men in their 20s who suffered heatstroke symptoms and died last week in Limestone County.

There are three simple steps to follow if you suspect someone may be suffering from heatstroke – get them cool, get them water, and call 911 immediately – do not wait to see if symptoms change.
