HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Local leaders are calling on citizens to "Stop the Violence." On Saturday they held a rally getting everyone involved in trying to make a difference.

It's all in response to recent violence, including the shooting death of 18-year-old Ashia Oliver. Oliver was killed Wednesday morning following a fight at the Sunoco Gas Station in North Huntsville. The event organizer said if you can make a positive impression on kids when they're young, it will help them have a brighter future.

The philosophy is simple: bring the community together with fun team building games. The event organizers said it's a way for kids to get mentorship from a mother or father that they may not have at home. It's also a place for adults to talk about how to raise their children in a positive environment.

The Second Chance Helping Hands, SCHH, Outreach Ministry was at the event, providing assistance to adults that need jobs, and children that need mentors.

"We want to stop the violence, we want to stop the bullying, but we have to actually have to target the areas, the children that are in need," said Stop the Violence Event Organizer Ashley Lanier.

One 5-year-old, Tristian Powell, understood the simple concept. He said, "Stop bullying, stop the violence."

Sylvester Redix, a player for the Rocket City Titans, held a fundraiser at Saturday night's game for the Oliver family.

"A lot of our players were affected about it, because they went to school with her," said Redix. "They were friends with different family members, so we wanted to show the family they are not alone."

Redix said he felt blessed to help the Oliver family. Stopping the violence is important to Redix, who said he and other Titans players try to mentor the community's youth.

"Keep them out of trouble, give them things to do during the summertime to show them, hey, violence isn't the only answer," said Redix.

One parent, Tameka Houston, said if another parent or any children needed someone to talk to, that you could contact her at tmk_houston@yahoo.com
