Android, Windows smartphones to include 'kill switch'

(CNN) – Google and Microsoft plan to include a so-called "kill switch" in the next version of their smartphone operating systems.

The technology makes it more difficult for a thief to use a stolen phone.

Newer versions of Apple's iOS already includes versions of a "kill switch" and Samsung launched a similar system last month.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says with Google and Microsoft on board, "kill switches" will be available for 97 percent of the smartphone community.

He's hoping the technology will help prevent phone thefts.
