BALTIMORE (WJZ/Sarah Gossard/CNN) – A Baltimore city police officer is facing animal cruelty charges, accused of killing a dog in a shocking act of brutality.

Baltimore city police say around 9 a.m. Saturday, they responded to a call of a woman who said she'd been bitten on the hand by a stray dog.

Police are calling her injuries superficial, but the actions of their officer are being called egregious.

"Unfortunately, at some point after that dog was contained with use of the dog pole, one of our officers used a knife and cut the dog's throat," Baltimore City Police Department Police Commissioner Dean Palmere said.

The officer's violent actions proved fatal for the 7-year-old Shar Pei named Nayla. The officer was arrested later  Saturday.

"We have no words to describe this," Palmere said. "To say that we're appalled at the allegations, I think, is an understatement."

The officer is under arrest for a felony charge of animal cruelty and has been suspended without pay.

"This is outrageous and an unacceptable breach of our protocol. The BPD does not condone and will not condone such actions," Palmere said.

The department has not released the name of the officer involved in the incident.

Police say while this incident remains under investigation, there is no indication the dog tried to attack the officer before he allegedly pulled out a knife and slit its throat.
