MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

According to new data provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, Alabama's health insurance premiums on policies that were purchased on the federal exchange are cheaper on average than those in other states.

HHS is the agency tasked with administering Obamacare across the country.

The study looked only at states that are using the federally facilitated exchange. It excluded states like New York, Oregon, California, and Kentucky that have implemented their own state-designed online marketplaces.

The average premium in Alabama on plans purchased on the exchange run by the governor is $76. That's just more than the cheapest average price in Georgia, $54, and the most expensive average price, nearly $150 in New Jersey.

The premium averages also take into account the amount of federal subsidies, or tax credits, that individuals qualified for when they purchased policies. The average Alabama plan came with approximately $250 worth of tax credits.

Further, the vast majority of premiums that Alabamians purchased were $100 or less, around 70%, higher than the national average.

The study doesn't address whether individuals are paying more for their new ACA compliant plans, or whether the plans are in place of policies that were cancelled when the law took effect.
