Nashville Rescue Mission handing out water to keep cool

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Workers and volunteers at the Nashville Rescue Mission are hitting the streets this week to hand out cold water to anyone left outside in the heat.

As with the "cold patrols" in the winter months, the Mission has "hot patrols" in the summer.

"The difference we have between our hot and cold patrol is that we really stick to the wide thoroughfares with the hot patrol. That's where the people are out. They're not trying to hunker down in an alleyway or anything like that. They're just trying to get from point A to point B," said Eric Grindeland, with the Nashville Rescue Mission.

Volunteers load up a van with bottled water to distribute.

They also offer a ride back to the Mission to cool off, or at least come into the shaded outdoor courtyard, where there are coolers are stocked with water.

"It's hot," Herman Nelson said.

And for 75-year-old Nelson, the temperature means trouble.

"I get kind of dehydrated, and I get sleepy and sit around all the time and don't want to get up and move around," he said.

But, luckily for Nelson and many other people, the Nashville Rescue Mission is patrolling the streets and handing out life-saving water.

"They could pass out. They could black out. They might have a seizure," said Mike Tater, with the Nashville Rescue Mission. "But worse case scenario is somebody dies from exposure."

The heat hides from nobody, so Tater has some advice.

"Stay indoors if you can, if you don't need to go out. Watch how much heat you get and make sure you drink enough water," he said.

If you'd like to help, they could always use more water. Drop off bottles of water at the Nashville Rescue Mission, located at 639 Lafayette St.
