Nursing home residents and senior citizens to compete in Olympic style games

Posted: Updated:

Nursing home residents and senior citizens from all over Alabama will be competing in Olympic style games on June 20 through June 21.

The Alabama Nursing Home Association (ANHA) Senior State Games will be held in various locations throughout the Birmingham area, and is in partnership with the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) and the ASF Foundation.

"This is an opportunity for nursing home residents to showcase their talents and competitive spirit," ANHA President Frank Brown said. "We believe competition and recognition will bring out the best in all who participate."

Competitors will participate in age appropriate games that are conducted in a similar way as the Olympics, with competitions in archery, dominos, swimming and many others.

"I appreciate the partnership, especially the support of the Alabama Nursing Home Association in encouraging our seniors to be more physically active," ADSS Commissioner Neal Morrison said. "Opportunities and venues like this allow our seniors to shine. I would like to encourage all seniors to become and stay active."

The Senior State Games XXXII Opening Ceremony for the nursing home and senior citizen competitors will be held on June 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex Arena.

"This partnership allows us to promote healthy lifestyles, physical activities and friendly competition among our Alabama seniors ages 50 and over," ASF Foundation President Ron Creel said.  "We look forward to the excitement and the smiles on our seniors' faces as the Games begin."
