BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The families and friends of three Birmingham police officers slain 10 years ago have gathered at the West Precinct on Tuesday to honor their memory.

Loved ones will meet at 6 p.m. the precinct, which is where Carlos Owen, Harley Chisolm and Robert Bennett were stationed.

Retired police officer Jim Henderson helped organize the event and says it will be a chance to not only remember Owen, Chisolm and Bennett, but all officers killed in the line of duty.

"I think you're constantly healing. You never forget," said Henderson.

Henderson says the idea for the memorial event came after he was contacted by Owen's daughter, who wished to do something for the officers.

Henderson says that he initially expected a few dozen people to attend but by Tuesday morning, requests to attend had flooded his email and voicemail. He now expects at least 100 people to attend the dinner.

Birmingham Police Department Lt. Sean Edwards was among the 75 plus attendees.

"We ought to take that to heart to know that they made a decision that day to put on a uniform and to come to work and do what they're called to do. so we should never, ever forget that," he said.

The afternoon of June 17, 2004, Owen, Chisolm and Bennett were shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant at a suspected drug house in Ensley.

Officer Michael Collins survived the shooting and spoke to FOX6 News Monday about that day.

During Tuesday's city council meeting, Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper and the city council paused for a moment of silence to honor the officers.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
