FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Water rates will increase in Florence, as city council members approved a measure to hike rates by 7.5 percent at Tuesday's meeting.

City officials said raising the water prices is not something they look forward to, but with recent announcements of several industries closing in the Shoals, they have no choice.

They said Hillshire Brands was the city's biggest water customer, spending nearly $900,000 a year. But with the meat processor closing at the end of the year, the city is forced to find the money elsewhere to maintain reserves and make bond payments.

Officials said they do not expect customers to see more than a $5 increase on their bill.

The new rate will go into effect July 1.
