HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Police and emergency crews are at the scene of a sport utility vehicle which crashed into a home at Moss Road and Pulaski Pike.
It happened just after 5 p.m. Monday. Neighbors said they saw the vehicle being pursued by Huntsville police. They said the SUV hit another vehicle before crashing into the garage of a nearby residence. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
Police confirmed they were in pursuit of the SUV following what they called a "minor traffic stop" on University Drive. Officers said they terminated the chase once the vehicle reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.
One person was transported to the hospital by ambulance with minor injuries; police confirmed the patient was a passenger in the SUV.
The damaged home belongs to Jay Stephens, who just paid more than $100,000 remodeling the property for sale.
"When my mom called me and told me someone drove into the garage, I figured it was just someone who stopped to look at the house," Stephens said. "I didn't expect to see this."
He estimated the damage as it stands now at about $9,000. However, the integrity of the garage is still in question.
"Bricks are sagging pretty rough right in the middle," Stephens said. "I'm afraid they are going to fall."
Police said the driver fled the scene after crashing into the house. K-9 units were brought to the scene to help in tracking the driver. At last check, he remains at large.
