(WMC) - An infection called Parvovirus began spreading at Memphis Animal Shelter, forcing it to close on Saturday. The virus is extremely contagious, especially for young dogs.

Before MAS disinfected the entire shelter, it gave adoption groups two hours to come by and save as many pups as they could. Volunteers were able to save 26 dogs, but not before the shelter were forced to euthanize 11 others.

Beverly King with Southern Jewel Dog Rescue in Olive Branch rushed to the shelter to save two young black dogs for which the group had raised money. She says when she showed up, the animal shelter was nearly deserted.

"It looked like a ghost town to me. There were very few rescue people there. In fact, I didn't see any. I knew that some had been there," said King. "I found out later that some did go, but I was there for about an hour and it was so disheartening to know that those animals were back behind those doors and very few people were there to save them."

The two dogs that King helped save are getting medical care and will be soon find homes.

MAS currently has 20 animals available for adoption with 36 more in need medical care before they become available. The shelter is scheduled to open Tuesday, June 17 at its regular time.

Rescue groups like Southern Jewel Dog Rescue need more foster families. If anyone wants to help, email Elizabeth Reed at delizabethreed@hotmail.com.
