PHIL CAMPBELL, AL (WAFF) -

Franklin County authorities are searching for the body of a teenager they say drowned in the Bates Landing area Sunday afternoon.

Sheriff Shannon Oliver said an 18-year-old man was with his family when he dove from a rock into the body of water. The sheriff said family members reported seeing the teen resurface briefly before going back under the water. He never resurfaced again.

The water in the area is approximately 30 feet deep, according to the sheriff.

The Franklin County Coroner's office confirmed that there had been a drowning, but could not confirm any further details.

Sheriff's officials, divers and other crews are combing the waters looking for any sign of the teen's body. The person's name has not been released.
