Posted: Updated:

One person was killed in a train accident near downtown Bessemer on Sunday morning.

According to Bessemer Police Sergeant Cortice Miles, a person inside a silver SUV was hit and killed at 9:03 a.m. Miles says it's not clear if the driver was attempting to beat the train at the crossing.

At 11:15 a.m., FOX6 News witnessed a train going southbound at the same crossing. The engineer sounded the horn and the crossing arms dropped without incident.

Sgt. Miles says police are interviewing a number of witnesses to the accident.

The Jefferson County coroner is going to perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

We'll have more on this developing story as it becomes available.
