SCOTT COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – A woman riding her bike across the country to raise money for charity was hit and killed on a rural road in Scott County.

Jamie Roberts, 24, of Baltimore was riding with her 4K for Cancer teammates on Friday when they stopped on Cincinnati Road, about three miles north of Sadieville, for maintenance, according to WLEX.

Around 3:30 p.m., a pickup truck struck two of the cyclists as they were doing repairs on their bikes, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Department. Roberts died at the scene. The other cyclist was taken to Georgetown Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck stayed on the scene and went with officers voluntarily. Officers reported to WLEX that he was "very upset" by the accident.

Police are still investigating the crash, but said that the road itself could be a factor. "This is a very rural road, not much in the way of shoulders, a lot of curves and hills which again makes it dangerous," said Cpt. Jearl Porter.
