MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Outgoing Madison County Superintendent Dr. David Copeland had few words Thursday night after the latest evaluation of his performance from the county school board.

"I'll have a lot to say on it," Dr. Copeland remarked, "but not tonight."

On a scale of 1 to 5, Dr. Copeland scored a 2, even lower than what Copeland got from the board one year ago.

The evaluation, by individual members of the board, scores the superintendent on issues like management of the system's personnel, technology and finances, as well as relations with the community and the board.

"I think the sentiment of the board is that Dr. Copeland probably had some room for improvement," said school board member Angie Bates.

"We just need more communication on everything," added David Vess.

Board members said the scores will have more effect on him than on the district, since he was eliminated from re-election in this year's primary, but that it was important to weigh in on how the board thinks he's doing.

"Our job as a board member was to give him our honest opinion because we are representing the communities that pay the tax dollars that pay his salary," said Bates.

Bates added that it will ultimately be up to Dr. Copeland to decide how to use the results of the evaluation to set his future goals.

Dr. Copeland's position as superintendent will be filled by either Matt Massey or Ronnie Blair. That decision will be made by the voters in July's runoff.
