HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Hundreds of students are getting a leg up on college classes this summer.

The annual CollegeFirst Summer Advanced Placement Institute kicked off Thursday at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. More than 300 high school students from around the state are participating in the three-week program, which is designed to better prepare students for the challenge of college-level AP courses in math, science and English.

"We take in high school students that will be going into AP classes the following semester," said content manager Cherita Garcia. "It's basically just to introduce them to the material, get them comfortable so they'll be successful in their AP classes."

CollegeFirst is also held at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.
