Tallapoosa County investigators say an 80-year-old man drowned at Lake Martin over the weekend while trying to save his dog.

The drowning happened Sunday in the Union community. Authorities identified the victim as Mike Gross of Dadeville.

According to witnesses, Gross had been swimming in the lake with his lab and the dog apparently had trouble making it back to shore. That's when Gross attempted to rescue the animal.

Witnesses attempted to perform CPR on Gross until medical professionals could arrive, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
