ENTERPRISE, AL (WSFA) -

Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell is encouraging all citizens to celebrate the lives and the value of Enterprise seniors.

Boswell signed a proclamation Tuesday declaring June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, according to the City of Enterprise.

"We respect and treasure our senior citizens," Boswell said. "They've worked a lifetime, raised families, and they've supported their communities and this nation with their time, their money and their service."

Boswell also added that senior citizens of this community and around the world have paved the way for the next generations.

"It is our collective responsibility to help make sure they live safely and with dignity," says Boswell.

In 2013, the Alabama DHR received more than 6,000 reports of adult neglect, abuse or exploitation. This is a 10 percent increase from the previous year.

DHR provides more an 1,500 vulnerable adults with protective services each month and works with law enforcement officials to keep the elderly adult population safe.

DHR Director Deana Stinson, DHR Service Supervisor Laura coggins and Adult Service Worker Suezette Hatten were at the proclamation signing Tuesday, and expressed their support for the city.

Coggins stated that purple is the color nationally known to represent elder abuse awareness. She states that everyone can show support by wearing purple, putting purple ribbons up on office doors or just displaying purple in some other way.

DHR leaders say that abuse is severely under-reported and asks anyone who suspects the mistreatment of an elderly person or an adult person with disabilities, to call Coffee County DHR at (334) 348-2000.

Reports may also be made toll free to the Adult Abuse Hotline at 1-800-458-7214 or by email to aps@dhr.alabama.gov.

All reports are confidential and can be made anonymously.
