BRIDGEPORT, AL (WAFF) -

Electric crews in a Jackson County town hard-hit by storms are working round the clock to get power turned back on.

Bridgeport city leaders said they're dealing with an array of issues, but one of the largest is the lack of power.

At City Hall, candlelight is about as bright as it gets for some of the offices that don't have windows to provide light. A generator outside only provides electricity for some city computers.

A similar situation at the town's police department: Their generator is helping keep the lights on inside, but with a lack of power to the repeater system, cell phones are the quickest form of dispatching police to calls.

Meanwhile, city crews are busy trying to clean up the debris that has covered some of the town's roadways after storms blew through Tuesday afternoon.

The town's mayor, David Hughes, said power outages are still widespread and will not be repaired overnight.

"Half the town has got it (power) and half the town is out," Hughes said. "But I want to commend the co-op for the job they're doing. Those guys worked all night. People: just be patient, because they're going to get it back on."

City officials estimate that power could be restored in two days. For some residents, having power is precluded by figuring out where they may be living.

Comforted by her husband Tom, Delores Beck is still visibly troubled by the damage done to her home, after a neighbor's tree fell on the roof. The tree made its way into the living room, kitchen, and a rear storage room, the damage extensive.

"All of a sudden, I heard wind, and it was just a matter of seconds," Delores said. "The whole house moved, and I came to the living room, and there's a tree limb hanging down."

Delores said that for now, she and her husband will spend the night with friends.
