Henrico teen on saving man from smoking car: 'If I die, I'm going to heaven'

A Henrico teen is being called a hero. He pulled an accident victim from his smoking car. We were there as the teen was reunited with the victim and his family.

"It was weird," said Elijawan Florence. "I thought it was going to blow up. It was scary. It was like something off the movies."

16-year-old Elijawan jumped into action. He had one thought.

"If I die," thought Elijawan. "I'm going to heaven."

The devastating crash was just steps from his Howard Road home.

"I had to break the door," said Elijawan. "I had to take him over to the sidewalk. We were helping him with his hands up, because he couldn't breathe."

NBC 12 was there as the young hero and victim were reunited for the first time since the accident.

"Thank you, and I love you," said the victim's wife Cindy Branch. "You are stuck with me for life. We are going to exchange numbers...birthdays!"

There was one thing that made the greeting especially emotional.

"The joy of knowing that we do still have some decent young men out here," said Branch with tears in her eyes. "They are not all bad, and I'm tired of everybody saying that all of our young Black boys are bad."

The victim, Toney Branch, still has a neck brace but is just happy to be alive.

"I heard someone say mister are you ok?" said Mr. Branch. "God kept me here. It could have easily went the other way. I'm just thankful I'm here, and I'm thankful for the young man."

Elijawan says he would do the same thing again.
