MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - On Tuesday night, a Midtown community had mixed answers. The question: Should a parking garage be in the Cooper-Young district?

Strano Sicilian Kitchen and Bar is one of the Cooper-Young business district's newest neighbors, only two weeks old. Co-owner Mitchell Steiner says that since moving in, they have only found one problem.

"The number one complaint patrons will have is they can't find adequate parking," said Steiner.

With 100 seats in his restaurant, Steiner had to invest in 24 complimentary parking spaces for patrons.

"I can imagine with the critical mass of all these new restaurants and growth in this area, if we don't have adequate parking that's going to hamper growth," he said.

Councilwoman Janis Fullilove is a big proponent of building a garage in the Cooper-Young area.

"It's so overcrowded. You come down here anytime during the week, especially on weekends, people are looking for places to park. They don't want to get parking tickets," noted Fullilove.

Meanwhile, others do not see the benefit of a garage, which would be built in place of an existing gym.

"No, I think it would take the character away from the place," said one Cooper-Young visitor.

Fullilove says they are working on getting Tourist Development Zone money to help build the garage.

"Here it is we have Crosstown for the next 20 years, won't pay any taxes. Here it is we have Bass Pro, won't pay any taxes. These mom and pop restaurants and stores they have been paying taxes through liquor sales, retail sales, property taxes," said Steiner.
