Blumenthal, Murphy respond to Oregon school shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WFSB) -

Senators from Connecticut are reacting to the news of a shooting at a school in the suburb of Portland, OR, on Tuesday morning.

Police officers and tactical teams were called to Reynolds High School in Troutdale at about 8 a.m. after a report of shots fired.

After the school was placed in lockdown and people were warned to stay away, the situation was "stabilized" and the shooter was found dead, according to authorities.

Upon hearing about the shooting, U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy took to Twitter.

"I just don't get it. When will Congress understand that school shootings won't stop until we DO SOMETHING???" Murphy tweeted.

Blumenthal tweeted that Tuesday's school shooting in Oregon was the 74th since the Sandy Hook School shooting. On Dec. 12, 2012, 20 children and six adults were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

"When will enough be enough to win common sense measures against gun violence?" Blumenthal tweeted.

In an interview with Eyewitness News, Blumenthal said "this horrific incident, chilling and tragic, brings back such painful memories but also should inspire us to act."

Blumenthal said the violence in Oregon is lighting the fire for another push on tough nationwide gun laws. Last year, he said, a plan for broader background checks on gun purchases, along with proposals for a ban on military-style assault rifles and limits on ammunition capacity, failed.

"I will seek every opportunity to bring back those common sense measures that would prevent this kind of tragic, horrific violence (with) background checks, mental health initiatives," Blumenthal added.

However, gun enthusiasts said that is not the ultimate solution, and that mental health needs to be addressed.

"Do something to try to get help for these people, before they get to the breaking point," said Brian Owens of TGS Outdoors. "I think that would be a better effect than demonizing a certain group."

The Sandy Hook Promise is a group that wants to bring to the table serious solutions on how another mass shooting, such as the one at Sandy Hook, can possibly be prevented in the future, according to its website. The group said its "thoughts and prayers" are with the victims and their families.

"Our hearts go out to the victim's family at this tragic time. As we see footage of parents desperate to reunite with their children, we are painfully reminded that no student, no family, no community should ever be subjected to such unthinkable terror," Sandy Hook Promise said on its website Tuesday.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
