HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Opening statements began Tuesday morning in the trial of a former teacher charged with first-degree sodomy.

Brett Naff worked as a middle school teacher at The Country Day School in Huntsville. He was arrested in Sept. 2012 after allegations were brought against him by a former student.

The prosecution called the victim as the first witness in Tuesday's proceedings. The prosecution alleged the abuse began in 2005 when the victim was under the age of 12.

Now an adult, the alleged victim broke down several times while on the stand. The victim described sexual encounters with Naff at Country Day School, on overnight soccer trips, as well as in a soccer van.

She also testified that Naff exchanged sexually explicit text messages with her. When asked why she didn't report the alleged abuse until years later, she said she wouldn't have been able to return to the private school or play soccer if she blew the whistle on the former teacher.

Day two of testimony begins Wednesday morning.
