New monument that honors former enlisted pilots unveiled

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A monument is now in place at Gunter Annex that honors former Alabama enlisted pilots.

A special ceremony was held on Monday to unveil the new monument that paid tribute to the former pilots.

more than 3,000 pilots served from 1912 to 1942 as they helped fill a shortage. These pilots flew in both World Wars.

Several former Air Force pilots were on hand for today's event.

"They are here because we are honoring them and this monument is a tribute to their many sacrifices and their many great accomplishments for the Air Force," said curator William Chivalette.

This monument is of America's first enlisted aviator, Corporal Vernon "L" Burge.
