WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced on Monday that he and his wife sold their family home in the tiny desert mining town of Searchlight, NV.

The 74-year-old senator grew up in the mining town but will move to Las Vegas to be closer to his four children and 16 grandchildren.

He said living in Las Vegas will also make his re-election campaign easier.

The Reids got $1.7 million for the house, 110 acres of land, mining claims and mining and water rights to Nevada Milling and Mining.

The deal also included two other mining claims in Searchlight to American Capital Energy.
