HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police responded to a shooting at the city's skate park Sunday evening.

It happened after 7:30 p.m. at the Lydia Gold Skatepark off of Cleveland Avenue.

Witnesses said the shooting stemmed from an argument between a photographer taking pictures of people posing at the park and a skater wanting to use the same area.

A witness was at the skatepark when the confrontation began. She said someone from the photographer's group grabbed a sub-machine gun and said they were "going to waste everyone."

According to the witness, that was when the skater went to grab his own gun to shoot at the person with the sub-machine gun.

Police said that the offender had a gun, but the nature of the weapon has not been confirmed. Officers said the skater did shoot the offender.

A HEMSI unit responded to the scene. Police said the offender was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh, a non-life threatening injury.

Police said children were present at the skatepark at the time of the shooting. Sheryl Dublin was on her way to the dog park next door at the time.

"I have never seen anything like this before," Dublin said. "Huntsville is a relatively calm city, you don't really get much violence, especially over here with the children. You just have people bringing their dogs and kids skateboarding. I have never seen anything like this."
