Coroner releases name of Olander Park drowning victim

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Lucas County Coroner's Office has released the name of a child who drowned at Olander Park over the weekend.

Mustafa Ali, 8, was pronounced dead at 8:58 p.m. Saturday, according to the coroner's office. The Coroner's Office says the boy died of accidental drowning.

The Toledo Fire Department dive team was called in after 7:00 p.m. The team pulled the then missing 8-year-old from the water at Sylvania's Olander Park on Saturday evening and rushed him to Toledo Hospital.

Police say the boy had been missing since about 6:30 p.m. and was pulled from the water around 8:30 p.m. During that time, officers searched cars in the parking lot to make sure the child was not inside one of them.

Police say the boy was at the park on a family outing when he went missing.

A Sylvania Police report on the incident says the child's death was non-criminal and accidental.

The Olander Park System released the following statement on the drowning:

The Olander Park System (TOPS) is saddened by this terrible tragedy and our hearts are with the boy's family. We will continue to work with the Sylvania Police Department, and all details regarding the incident will come through their office.

Incident did not take place in our swim area, and swimming is prohibited in all other areas of the park.

Thank you to the Fire and Police Departments from the City of Sylvania, Sylvania Township, City of Toledo, and Springfield Township for their assistance with this matter.

The beach area is open from noon to 7 daily and is staffed with lifeguards. The lifeguards had already left for the day when the incident happened.
