PORTSMOUTH, VA (WSFA) -

Authorities are confirming the capture of a suspect sought in connection to the Friday morning stabbing of a service member at a Virginia Naval site. He has ties to Montgomery and Opelika, according to his two Facebook pages.

Wilbur Garrett Harwell, 26, was captured near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, according to Raycom partner WWBT-TV in Virginia. Harwell was sought by law enforcement after the stabbing on Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Portsmouth Annex, according to information released by the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Public Affairs Office. That is the location of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

The commanding officer confirmed in a news conference that an active duty service member was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another active duty member.

Harwell is an active duty third class petty officer (E4). His Facebook pages indicate he lived in Montgomery and Opelika and graduated from Opelika High School and that he studied at Trenholm State Technical College in Montgomery.

Jim Moir with the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Public Affairs Office said Harwell listed his home of record as Montgomery when he joined the Navy.

A motive for the stabbing was not immediately known, but Navy officials would say there was an argument.

The stabbing occurred in front of the installation's Navy Exchange around 8:30 a.m., according to officials. The Naval Exchange is located in a separate building outside of the hospital.

The victim is identified as 25-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin D. Powell, of Sarver, Pennsylvania. He remains in critical condition at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS, is conducting an investigation.
