Clarksville Doughboy likely to get new home

Posted: Updated:

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Doughboy statue in Middle Tennessee is likely to get a new home after being repaired.

The Leaf-Chronicle reports the Clarksville Public Arts Commission favors moving the World War I memorial to the Tennessee State Veterans Home when it opens next spring. City officials would have to approve the recommendation before the statue is relocated.

Clarksville Parks and Recreation Director Mark Tummons said the move seems like a natural fit

A sculptor is repairing a broken hand and replacing the gun on the statue, which has been vandalized multiple times since being restored and rededicated in 2010 in downtown Clarksville.

City leaders have said they want the Doughboy to be better protected in the future and asked the arts commission to make a recommendation on a location.
