TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

City leaders and residents alike prepared for the 36th annual Helen Keller Festival in Tuscumbia on Thursday. As with years past, the 2014 festival promised fun for the entire family.

Organizers met at Ivy Green on Thursday to discuss the plans and events on tap for the year. They had a little of everything up their sleeves from live entertainment, to arts and crafts, and much more.

In addition to the list of events, organizers recognized the year's Helen Keller Award of Courage recipient, 13-year-old Ahbee Orton. Orton was a rising eighth grader at Florence Middle School. The 13-year-old isn't letting the fact that she's blind stop her from reaching her goals.

"The thing is, not being able to see, I can still do a lot of things," said Ahbee Orton. "I have a different way of doing it."

In conjunction with the festival, the 53rd season of "The Miracle Worker" play opens Friday night.
