HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Another major retail development is being planned for Madison County.

Cabela's will sit on Governors West Road near I-565 and Research Park Boulevard. The outdoor retailer will be part of a larger development called Parkside Town Centre, which is meant to compliment its neighbor, Bridge Street Town Centre.

But what about Madison Square Mall?

The already fully developed mall sits on about 100 acres just a stone's throw away from Bridge Street and the proposed Parkside Town Centre. In fact, it's only two and a half miles away at the corner of University Drive and Research Park Boulevard. Some say building a new shopping center so close will just drive more people away from Madison Square Mall.

"But it's fully developed, so there's a lot of asset on that land," said Shane Davis, Huntsville City Director of Planning. "So, you try to figure out, how do you discount that asset to tear down something that has value and bring something back? That's very challenging."

Davis said it took two years for city leaders to work out the plan to redevelop an existing location for the new Whole Foods in Huntsville. He said the city is working on the same thing for Madison Square Mall.
