MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Utilities are continuing to respond to large outages across Madison County caused by the heavy thunderstorm.

Crews responded to large outages in Jones Valley, North Huntsville, Toney and Madison, including smaller outages west of Memorial Parkway and Highway 231 on Thursday night. They worked to restore power to approximately 1,000 customers scattered across the county.

As of Friday morning, crews reduced the number of customers without power to about 300.

Due to dangerous weather conditions, power restoration took longer than normal. Thunderstorms with frequent lightning and high winds caused extensive scattered damage Thursday night. THere were broken utility poles, trees and tree debris in power lines, and power lines on the ground.

At the height of the outages, Huntsville Utilities estimated as many as 10,000 customers were without power.

Utilities requested customers to report outages to 256-53-LIGHT (5-4448), not through email or social media.

Huntsville Utilities worked through the night to repair the damaged equipment and restore power to each outage area. Customers with internet access can monitor progress by viewing the power outage map on the Huntsville Utilities website.
