Dr. Ben Carson signs books in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A conservative firebrand who recently finished second in a major straw poll of possible Republican presidential candidates was in Montgomery Wednesday night.

Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neuro-surgeon and current best selling author and Fox News commentator, signed copies of his latest book, "One Nation: What we can all do to save America's future," at the Eastchase Books-A-Million.

A few hundred people were there waiting for him.

Carson first came into the public eye in 1987 when he led a team of surgeons in separating conjoined twins who were joined at the back of the head.

He retired last year and has since become a darling of the far right and a regular on Fox News.

His ascension in conservative political circles has not come without controversy. Last year he said Obamacare was the worst thing to happen to this country since slavery, and this year he said America is very much like Nazi Germany.

Doctor Carson is returning to Montgomery in October. He will be the keynote speaker at Faulkner University's annual benefit dinner.

Tickets are still available.

Another cold morning out there today, but this is the last of that! Temperatures this morning are into the mid to upper teens and low 20s, but the wind chill is pretty much nonexistent because we have a light wind from the south at 2 mph.
