DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Dana McKean has a lot of rules at her house, but that doesn't keep these kids from making a big summer time splash. "We've had a pool for eight years and I have four grandchildren six and under, and we enjoy the pool in the summertime and the warm weather."

This is one grandmother who doesn't mess around. "Safety is most important to me because they're my loved ones, and if something were to happen to them, it would devastate our lives."

She said they take specific steps. "We put locks on every gate. We have them wear the puddle pushers, which are coast guard approved for them to wear - even on the boat."

Karen Ivey, the coordinator of Safe kids Huntsville, says the time to take precautionary measures is now. "Drowning is the number one cause of death in children one to four, and it's the second leading cause of death for five to 14-year-olds."

She advocates swimming lessons, but parents need to say when the child is ready. "Children can drown in backyards, wadding pools, buckets of water, the toilets in your house, and if you've set up something where you bathe the dog outside and forget to empty the water, it can be deadly. Babies can drown in one inch of water."

The bottom line? There are rules and these kids know it, and they obey those rules.

All in an attempt to be safer for Your Health.
