Governor candidate Griffith to focus on jobs

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Former District 5 Congressman Parker Griffith won the Democratic primary on Tuesday night, but he's already looking ahead to the general election for governor in the fall.

In terms of what issues he will focus on in the coming weeks, Griffith said job creation will be his top priority. He said he will also focus on the lottery for education and the expansion of Medicaid.

Griffith said north Alabama has lost over 5,000 jobs over the past year, such as when Hillshire Brands announced it would close its Florence facility. He said unemployment is increasing in Alabama, so job creation will be number one.

"We're going to change the face of Alabama," Griffith said.

The Democratic candidate also spoke about the state legislature, saying there is no democracy or debate going on. Griffith said since the legislature is focusing more on guns, abortion or gay rights, they are distracted from employment issues.

While facing an incumbent is a difficult feat to overcome, Griffith said he will go to the issues and emphasized there are fewer people working than there were two years ago.
