HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Dr. Parker Griffith has won the Democratic nomination for the gubernatorial race in Alabama. He will face off against Republican incumbent Robert Bentley for the November general election.

Dr. Parker Griffith is a successful businessman who has owned radio stations, nursing homes and funeral homes. He is also a retired North Alabama oncologist.

Dr. Griffith has come full-circle, back to the party where he started. If nothing else, it has given his name recognition. He believes that, along with his years of experience in Montgomery, Huntsville and Washington, will give him the Democratic nomination for Governor over Bass.

Griffith told us when he voted Tuesday morning that he is confident, and that he "is sure that Governor Bentley will want to debate me."

Griffith said he was counting on voters to not look as much at his swap of parties but to look at the people of Alabama. He said children need an education lottery, and the state needs to expand Medicaid to take care of more under-served people – a by-product of that will be the creation of 30,000 new jobs, he said.

Governor Bentley is also under increasing pressure to expand Medicaid. Monday, David Spillers, the CEO of Huntsville Hospital, one of the largest hospital systems in the country, said that he is pressing the Governor to expand Medicaid to deliver better health care to some 125,000 more enrollees.

With Griffith's win of the Democratic nomination Tuesday, the war of words and action between him and incumbent Bentley will certainly heat up.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
