Elderly woman turned away from polls for improper ID

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama leaders predicted a small turnout at the poles for Tuesday's Primary Election.

A Madison County official said the turnout was "dismal."

Officials said they ran into very few problems at polling locations. One issue, though, was the new voter ID law.

According to officials, a 92-year-old woman without proper ID was turned away. Her driver's license expired within the last year, and the woman did not have another form of proper identification.

Election officials said they tried to help her however possible, but there was no way around the law.

Madison County Election Administrator Frank Barger said the woman could have voted without the ID, only if two election officials at that precinct could personally identify her, but they could not.

She also could have chosen to cast a provisional ballot, but did not do so.

A provisional ballot would have allowed her vote to count if she could show proper ID by Friday.

We were not able to get in touch with the 92-year-old.
