Voting supporters try to bring in more traffic

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

State officials said they do not expect a great turnout at Tuesday's primary. The Secretary of State speculated around 700,000 voters will hit the polls – only 25 percent of registered voters.

The expectation is reflected by representatives from many districts. In Madison County, election officials said the numbers have been dismal where turnout is concerned.

One official said that historically, election years without the presidential race on the ballot have lower turnout. Weather also factors in to foot traffic: while sunnier later in the day, earlier rain may have discouraged potential voters.

Another factor is that primaries, in general, draw fewer people than in the general election. However, a few voters said they never miss the chance to cast a ballot, and they try to encourage others to do the same.

"We were just inside encouraging some young people, registered voters, to go vote," said voter Eleanor Flippen. "As a citizen, to vote is just a marvelous opportunity we have in a country like the United States."

Election officials said that beyond the expected low turnout, they were ready to deal with any small issues they may run into during the day - things like polling location changes and new machines.

Madison County Elections Administrator Frank Barger said they try to make the process as smooth as possible so that everyone who does show up can cast a ballot easily.

In the 2010 primaries, only 32 percent of registered voters in Alabama actually voted, down from 38 percent in 2006.
