BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police are investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy who died this week from injuries he received last month as a homicide.

The victim, Antonio Smith, had swelling and bleeding on his brain when he was taken to Children's of Alabama hospital on Thursday, May 22. He was placed into the Intensive Care Unit.

Birmingham police officers responded to the hospital around 11:11 a.m. on May 22 and noticed visible bruising on the boy's shoulder and left side.

The coroner's office notified police detectives on Monday, June 2, that Smith had been pronounced dead by the hospital's staff.

Birmingham police say they are now investigating Smith's death as a homicide. They believe the incident happened on May 22 in the 800 block of 30th Street South. Police have not said how they believe Smith was injured or released his official cause of death.

Police say they will release further information as it becomes available. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the BPD Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764.
