BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Officials with the Birmingham Police Department confirm the woman shot at an assisted living facility in Birmingham on Monday died Tuesday morning.

The victim, identified as 70-year-old Jessie Taylor, died Tuesday morning at UAB Hospital.

The Jefferson County Coroner identified the suspect as 75-year-old Willie Bell. The coroner's office says Bell died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Birmingham officers entered Bell's room and found him deceased after trying to contact him for several hours following the shooting at McMillon Estates.

Taylor was allegedly shot in the upper chest area by Bell. Earlier information from police indicated she had had been shot in the face or shoulder.

Police received a call of shots fired around 1:30 p.m. Monday at McMillon Estates, located at 57th Street Ensley and Court I in west Birmingham.

Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards says that the victim and suspect may have been in a relationship at one time, but would not confirm if that was a factor in the shooting.

April Lacey, the granddaughter of resident Virginia Wright, spoke to her grandmother shortly after the shooting. Lacey says that she and Wright know the victim and are praying for her and her family. Wright described the victim and suspect as friends, saying the woman would help the man, who used a wheelchair, with cleaning and cooking.

Gladys Stewart, 89, was arriving home around the time the shooting happened. She said she knows the victim and described her as very friendly. She said the shooting was shocking and that she has never experienced any thing like this in eight years of living at McMillon Estates.

Birmingham police are continuing their investigation into this shooting. They are speaking with McMillon Estates management concerning firearms policies.
